About This Game

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a free team-based WWII shooter that started life as a paid expansion and ended up giving itself away instead. Splash Damage built it, id Software executive produced it, and when the single-player half of the project hit development trouble, Activision made the surprising call to release the entire multiplayer game free rather than shelve it. That decision turned out to be one of the best in FPS history.

Up to 32 players split into Axis and Allies, fighting across objective-based maps set at real WWII battle locations. Five distinct classes, Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops, and Covert Ops, force real teamwork rather than a straight deathmatch scramble. Two decades on, it’s still considered one of the finest class-based shooters ever made, free or paid.

It’s a legitimate piece of FPS history and an easy fit among the best free FPS games for PC, still played on active servers to this day.

Is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Free?

Yes, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is completely free, and it has been since its original release in 2003. Activision and id Software released the full multiplayer game as freeware from day one, and it remains free through official storefronts today.

Nothing is held back. Every class, every map, and full multiplayer access come at zero cost, with no premium tier bolted on afterward. The game’s engine code was also released under the GPL, so a dedicated community has kept building and refining it long after the original release.

Gameplay & Features

Every match runs on objectives, not kill counts. One team attacks, the other defends, and victory comes from planting dynamite on a specific wall, escorting a tank through a checkpoint, or capturing a key position, not from padding a scoreboard. Losing track of the objective usually means losing the round no matter how many kills you’ve racked up.

The five classes each play a genuinely distinct role. Medics keep the team alive and revive the fallen, Engineers plant charges and build fortifications, Field Ops call in artillery and supply ammo, and Covert Ops sneak behind enemy lines in disguise. Coordinating those roles well is the whole game.

  • Five distinct classes with genuinely different roles: Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops, and Covert Ops
  • Objective-based maps set at real WWII locations, up to 32 players per match
  • A persistent XP and skill system that rewards teamwork over solo kills
  • GPL-licensed engine code, which fueled community projects like ET: Legacy
  • An active community still running dedicated servers two decades later

If you like this style of class-based teamwork shooter, Team Fortress 2 is the obvious next stop, another free FPS built around the same idea of specialized roles over pure aim skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory free?
Yes, entirely. It’s been free since its 2003 release, and it’s officially free on both Steam and GOG today.

Do I need to own Return to Castle Wolfenstein to play?
No. Although it was originally planned as an expansion for that game, Enemy Territory was released as a completely standalone, free title. You don’t need the original game.

Are servers still active?
Yes. A dedicated community keeps servers running to this day, particularly through the ET: Legacy project, which continues to receive updates.

What’s ET: Legacy?
A community-built, open-source client compatible with the original game, adding widescreen support, performance improvements, and bug fixes while preserving the core gameplay.

Does it work on Mac or Linux?
Yes, the original game and ET: Legacy both support Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Is there a single-player mode?
No. The single-player portion of the original expansion concept was scrapped, and Enemy Territory shipped as a multiplayer-only release. You can play solo against bots if you host your own local match.
