About This Game

Space Quest II: Vohaul’s Revenge Remake is a free fan rebuild of Sierra’s 1987 sci-fi comedy, and it turns a 16-colour typing adventure into a hand-drawn, fully voiced point-and-click game. You’re Roger Wilco, space janitor and reluctant hero. Sludge Vohaul is back with a scheme to infest the planet Xenon with genetically engineered door-to-door life insurance salesmen. Roger gets in the way, so Vohaul ships him off to the jungle planet Labion to spend his days in the mines. Escape first. Save the galaxy from sales pitches second.

The original came from Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe, the Two Guys from Andromeda, and Sierra On-Line released it on November 14, 1987. It ran on Sierra’s AGI engine with a text parser. Sierra later remade the first game in VGA but never gave the sequel the same treatment.

Fan team Infamous Adventures, later known for Quest for Infamy, stepped in. They announced the remake on April 1, 2007, with screenshots and a demo, then spent more than five years of spare time finishing it. It arrived at the end of December 2011 with new hand-drawn backgrounds, hand-animated characters and over 4,000 lines of recorded dialogue. A Mac version followed in 2012. Version 2.0 landed on January 1, 2020, adding Linux support, bug fixes and a hidden nod to Space Quest III, and a universal Mac build for Apple Silicon arrived in 2024.

Is Space Quest II Remake Free?

Yes. The Space Quest II Remake is freeware, with no cost, no microtransactions and no paid full version. It’s an unofficial fan remake. The itch.io page shows a “name your own price” button, but you can pay nothing, and any tip is optional.

Gameplay & Features

It plays like a Sierra adventure from the early 90s. You explore, collect items, talk to oddballs and solve puzzles, and Roger can die in plenty of silly ways, so save often. The jokes still lean on the original’s sci-fi parodies, now with proper voices behind them.

  • A point-and-click interface replaces the typed commands of the 1987 original.
  • Hand-drawn backgrounds and hand-animated characters, styled after Sierra’s later VGA games.
  • A full voice pack with more than 4,000 recorded lines.
  • Re-recorded music and modernized cutscenes.
  • Extra content and new dialogue beyond the original, plus a hidden Space Quest III Easter egg added in version 2.0.
  • Built in Adventure Game Studio, with builds for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Fans of Sierra remakes will feel at home with AGD Interactive’s Quest for Glory II remake and King’s Quest II: Romancing the Stones, while Heroine’s Quest carries the Quest for Glory torch into Norse myth. For more sci-fi laughs, try Zak McKracken: Between Time and Space or the cyberpunk Beneath a Steel Sky.

PC System Requirements

Infamous Adventures doesn’t publish formal specs. The game runs on the lightweight Adventure Game Studio engine and asks little of a modern machine. The downloads are big, though, at roughly 460 to 490 MB, because of the voice pack.

The Mac build is a universal binary that runs natively on Apple Silicon. The Linux build is x86 only, and players have reported needing to install libpng12 manually before it launches.

How to Download & Play Space Quest II Remake for Free

The remake isn’t on Steam, GOG or Epic. The official source is the Infamous Adventures page on itch.io, which is the safe place to get it. You’ll land on an optional tip screen first, and you can choose to pay nothing. Not sure which other sites to trust? Our guide to safe free PC game download sites explains what to look for.

  1. Go to the official page and download Space Quest II VGA Remake free from Infamous Adventures on itch.io.
  2. Click Download Now and skip the tip, or enter $0.
  3. Pick your file. Windows players can take the version 2.0 installer (about 485 MB) or the portable archive (about 461 MB). Mac players want the Universal Binary, and Linux has its own archive of about 464 MB. The Windows and Linux archives are .rar files, so you’ll need an extraction tool.
  4. Install or extract the game, then launch it. A short manual is also available as an optional extra download.

Curious about the 1987 original? It’s part of the paid Space Quest 1+2+3 collection on GOG.

FAQ

Is the Space Quest II remake official?
No. It’s an unofficial fan remake rather than an official Sierra or Activision release, made by the volunteer team at Infamous Adventures and given away free.

Do I need to play Space Quest I first?
No. Vohaul’s Revenge continues Roger’s story, but the setup is easy to follow without the first game.

Is it the same game as the 1987 original?
The story beats are the same, but the art, interface, voices and music are all new, and the remake adds extra content.

Does it work on Mac and Linux?
Yes. There’s a universal Mac build for Apple Silicon and Intel, and a Linux build for x86 systems since version 2.0.
