Mechabellum is a tactical auto battler about giant robots, and it asks a strange thing of a strategy game: once the shooting starts, keep your hands off. Developed by Game River and published by Dreamhaven, it has you draft an army of mechs, customize them, and place them on the battlefield. Then you watch your plan either crush the enemy or fall apart in spectacular 3D.
The hook is adaptation. Your army carries over from round to round, and so does your opponent’s, so every battle tells you something about what to build next. Snipers getting swarmed? Upgrade them into rapid-fire swarm clearers. Heavy tanks too slow? Strap self-destruct charges to them. It’s all strategy and no clickfest, which makes it a natural fit for RTS fans who love the decisions but hate the APM race.
Mechabellum entered Early Access in May 2023 and hit its full release in September 2024. It now has a permanent Free Edition on Steam, so you don’t need to spend anything to try it.
Is Mechabellum Free?
Yes. Mechabellum has a permanent Free Edition on Steam that includes the vast majority of the game, online PvP and the co-op Star Expedition mode among it. It isn’t a demo or a timed trial.
The Free Edition does come with a few limits: restricted public chat, less Star Expedition warehouse space, slower cosmetic rewards, and slower Tech Point unlocks. The full version costs $14.99 and removes those limits, and any progress you’ve made carries over when you upgrade. Beyond that, the game sells optional cosmetic skin packs and Elite Battle Contracts, while the Standard Battle Contract is free for everyone.
Is it pay-to-win? Not really. Money doesn’t buy stronger units. The one gameplay-adjacent catch is that slower Tech Point unlock rate, so free players will open up tech options at a slower pace than paying players.
Gameplay & Features
Each round follows the same rhythm. You spend supply on new units, unlock upgrades, and arrange your formation. Then both armies clash automatically. The fun is in reading the battlefield: spotting what your opponent is building, predicting their next move, and placing the perfect counter before they adapt to you. Dozens of units are available, from the nimble Wasp to the flame-spewing Vulcan, and between matches you can tune each unit’s tech tree in the hangar.
There’s more variety in the mode list than you might expect:
- 1v1 Ranked is the competitive heart of the game, backed by weekly in-game tournaments.
- 2v2 and free-for-all trade the chess-match tension for teamwork or outright chaos.
- Survival throws waves of AI enemies at you, solo or with a friend.
- Rift Mode keeps changing the rules, so no two sessions feel quite the same.
- Star Expedition is an untimed roguelite campaign for one player or two in co-op, built for anyone who wants depth without a ranked clock ticking.
If the drafting and counter-picking click for you, the Battlegrounds mode in Hearthstone scratches a similar itch with cards instead of mechs. The whole auto battler genre traces back to a custom map for Dota 2, which is still free and still massive. And if you’d rather control every unit yourself, StarCraft II and the open-source 0 A.D. are both free real-time strategy picks.
