About This Game

Maniac Mansion Deluxe is a free fan remake of Lucasfilm Games’ 1987 classic Maniac Mansion, rebuilt with colourful VGA-style graphics, a friendlier interface and a score borrowed from Day of the Tentacle. The setup is pure B-movie. A meteor crashes behind Dr. Fred and Nurse Edna’s creepy mansion, strange things start happening, and a girl named Sandy ends up locked inside. Her boyfriend Dave needs two friends to sneak in and get her out. Which two you pick changes the puzzles, the people you meet and how the story ends.

The original came from Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, and it was the first game built on the SCUMM engine, which got its name from the title. That engine went on to power a long run of LucasArts adventures, including Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Maniac Mansion also pioneered playable characters with different abilities and cutscenes that carried real clues.

A German fan known as LucasFan and his crew released the remake on May 21, 2004, built in Adventure Game Studio. It was downloaded more than 100,000 times in its first week, according to the AGS listing, and it won Best Programming at the 2004 AGS Awards. The same creator later started Maniac Mansion Mania, a long-running series of fan-made episodes set in the same universe.

Is Maniac Mansion Deluxe Free?

Yes. Maniac Mansion Deluxe is freeware, with no price, no microtransactions and no paid version. It’s an unofficial fan remake, so it has never been sold.

Gameplay & Features

This is a faithful, one-to-one remake. The story, puzzles and cast match the 1987 game, but everything has a fresh coat of paint. You explore the mansion room by room, juggle your three characters and try not to get caught by Edna. The original’s multiple endings are all still there.

  • Choose Dave plus two friends, and watch how your team changes the solutions.
  • Redrawn VGA-style graphics that keep the classic Lucasfilm look.
  • A reworked SCUMM-style interface with far better mouse controls.
  • Digital sound effects and continuous background music, with tunes borrowed from Day of the Tentacle.
  • Bug fixes and a few small tweaks, including a slightly harder puzzle for removing the paint blotch on the fourth floor.
  • Ten languages: English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Latin American Spanish, Maltese, Bulgarian and Russian.

If you like LucasArts humor, Zak McKracken: Between Time and Space and Flight of the Amazon Queen are natural next stops. AGD Interactive’s King’s Quest II: Romancing the Stones did for Sierra what this remake did for Lucasfilm, and the Space Quest II remake adds more sci-fi comedy.

How to Download & Play Maniac Mansion Deluxe for Free

The original LucasFan Games website no longer exists, so the Adventure Game Studio website is the best official home for the remake. It hosts the download directly, and no account is needed. The game isn’t on Steam, GOG or Epic. If you’re unsure about other sites, our guide to safe free PC game download sites explains what to look for.

  1. Go to the game’s page and download Maniac Mansion Deluxe free from the Adventure Game Studio website.
  2. Click the Download Link beside the Windows version. It’s a small file of about 6 MB.
  3. Extract the files to a folder of your own.

Want the 1987 original? It’s sold on Steam, and a copy is also hidden inside Day of the Tentacle Remastered.

It’s an unofficial fan remake. Lucasfilm and Disney hold the rights to the original game, and this isn’t an officially licensed release. It has been given away free and hosted on the AGS website for many years.

Do I need the original game?
No. Maniac Mansion Deluxe is a complete, standalone game with the full story and puzzles.

Is it the same game as the 1987 original?
The story and puzzles are the same, with new graphics, music and controls and a handful of small fixes and tweaks.

Does it work on Mac?
Not natively. It’s a Windows game, so Mac players need a compatibility layer such as Wine.
