King’s Quest III: To Heir Is Human Remake is Infamous Adventures’ free VGA rebuild of Sierra’s 1986 adventure, and it swaps the typed commands of the original for full point-and-click play. You’re not Graham this time. You’re Gwydion, a young slave toiling for the evil wizard Manannan in a house high on a mountain. Between chores, you explore, collect useful items and learn the spells that might get you out. It’s also a story with a secret about Gwydion’s own family, and it ties back to the first two King’s Quest games.
Roberta Williams designed the original, and it ran on Sierra’s AGI engine with 16 colours and a text parser. Fans of the early games were famously thrown by its new direction. Sierra later remade the first King’s Quest in VGA but never touched the third.
Fan team Infamous Adventures filled that gap. Using the Adventure Game Studio engine, they released their remake on June 18, 2006, aiming to bring the game up to the standard of King’s Quest V while making it run on modern computers. They worked in the tradition of AGD Interactive’s King’s Quest remakes, made no profit, and added new scenes, new story material and easter eggs. Josh Mandel, who voiced King Graham in Sierra’s own King’s Quest V and VI, lends his voice.

Is King’s Quest III Remake Free?
Yes. This remake is freeware, with no price, no microtransactions and no paid full version. It’s an unofficial fan project, so it has never been sold. The itch.io page shows a “name your own price” button, but you can pay nothing, and any tip is optional.
Gameplay & Features
The story and puzzles stay true to the original. You explore the wizard’s house and the lands beyond, collect inventory and finish the chores Manannan sets while keeping out of his way. Save often.
- All-new VGA backgrounds in the style of Sierra’s early-90s adventures.
- Hand-drawn close-up cutscenes and dialogue portraits for the characters.

FAQ
Is the King’s Quest III remake legal?
It’s an unofficial fan remake. Activision owns King’s Quest, and this isn’t an official release. Infamous Adventures has given it away free and made no profit from it.
How is this different from AGD Interactive’s King’s Quest III Redux?
They’re two separate fan remakes of the same game. AGD Interactive released its King’s Quest III Redux in 2011. Infamous Adventures’ version came first, in 2006, and has its own art, music and voices.
Do I need to play King’s Quest I and II first?
No. The story stands on its own, though the ending pays off better if you know Daventry’s history.
Does it work on Mac and Linux?
Mac, yes, with an official download. Linux has no official build, so use Wine.
