Heroine’s Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is a free adventure/RPG hybrid from indie team Crystal Shard, built as a love letter to Sierra’s Quest for Glory series and set deep in Norse mythology. Egther, the last of the frost giants, has sworn to bury the world in ice. The forest of Jarnvidr is already in the grip of the worst winter anyone can remember. Trolls and wolves roam at night, caravans vanish in the cold, and the jarl has sent out a call for a heroine. That’s you.
Crystal Shard founder Pieter Simoons wrote and programmed the game, and work began in the mid-2000s. At the time, fans had been trying to build a Quest for Glory successor for years, most notably the Hero6 project, which never shipped. Crystal Shard, a volunteer team spread across three continents and already known for A Tale of Two Kingdoms, actually finished theirs.
It came out free on Christmas Day 2013, then won 11 AGS Awards, including Best Game Created with AGS. A Steam release followed in March 2014. Even Quest for Glory co-creator Corey Cole praised it as a female-centric heroic quest. Updates have continued since, and a native macOS version arrived in December 2024.

Is Heroine’s Quest Free?
Yes. Heroine’s Quest is freeware, and the full game costs nothing, with no microtransactions, ads or locked content. Steam labels it Free to Play, but that’s only Steam’s category name. There’s one optional paid extra, the Developer Appreciation Package. It’s essentially a tip jar, and it contains developer documents, cut resources and an old alpha build. None of it affects the game itself.
Gameplay & Features
Half of Heroine’s Quest is a classic point-and-click adventure. Explore, talk, collect inventory and work out puzzles. The other half is a character-driven RPG. Train your skills, fight monsters in real time and build a heroine who can survive Jarnvidr’s brutal winter. If you’ve played Quest for Glory, the rhythm will feel instantly familiar.
- Three classes with genuinely different playthroughs. The warrior is the most straightforward, the sorceress hunts for the right spell, and the rogue cheats her way past problems without getting caught.
- Class-specific solutions and side quests that make replays worthwhile. One reviewer was still finding new content on a third run.
- Norse myth handled with real care. The Norns and the valkyrie Brynhild are among the figures you’ll meet.
- More than 100 hand-painted backgrounds, plus full English voice acting.
- Modern conveniences on Steam: 46 achievements, cloud saves and trading cards.
Want the series that inspired it? AGD Interactive’s Quest for Glory II remake is free too. The studio’s King’s Quest II: Romancing the Stones covers the other side of the Sierra family, and Beneath a Steel Sky rounds things out with a dose of cyberpunk.

How to Download & Play Heroine’s Quest for Free
You have two official, safe sources. Steam is easiest if you want achievements and cloud saves. Crystal Shard’s itch.io page is the way to go if you’d rather skip a launcher. Either way, it’s worth knowing which sites to trust, and our guide to safe free PC game download sites covers that.
- Download Heroine’s Quest free on Steam (a free Steam account is required), or grab the DRM-free build from Crystal Shard’s itch.io page, where no account is needed.
- On Steam, click Play Game and the download starts. On itch.io, pick the Windows, macOS or Linux file and extract it.
- Make sure you have around 500 to 700 MB of free space.
- Launch the game and choose your class. Your choice shapes the whole playthrough, so pick the one whose puzzle style appeals most.
FAQ
Is Heroine’s Quest really free, or is there a paid full version?
It’s really free. The complete game costs nothing. The only paid item is an optional appreciation DLC with developer extras, and it doesn’t add gameplay.
Is Heroine’s Quest connected to Quest for Glory?
Not officially. It’s an original game with its own world and story, made by Crystal Shard as a tribute to Sierra’s series.
Which class should I pick first?
The warrior is the most straightforward and makes a good first playthrough. The sorceress and rogue reward players who enjoy trickier, more creative solutions.
Does Heroine’s Quest work on Steam Deck?
Yes. It has a native Linux version, and much of its Steam playtime is logged on Steam Deck.
