Flight of the Amazon Queen is a free 1940s pulp-adventure comedy that plays like a lost LucasArts game. You’re Joe King, a wisecracking pilot for hire with a thick Brooklyn accent, flying movie star Faye Russell to a jungle photo shoot when a storm drops the plane into the Amazon. After that, things get strange. There’s a mad scientist, a tribe of Amazon women, a scheme to turn them into dinosaur warriors, a mystical crystal skull and, somehow, a lederhosen company.
Brisbane-based Interactive Binary Illusions released it in 1995 for the Amiga and MS-DOS, with designers John Passfield and Steve Stamatiadis at the helm. The Amiga version was silent, while the DOS CD edition added full voice acting. The team was reportedly in talks with LucasArts about publishing it in the United States, but those plans fell through.
That could have been the end of it. Instead, in March 2004, Passfield and Stamatiadis, who held the rights, released the game as freeware after the ScummVM developers asked about supporting it. It became one of ScummVM’s earliest supported games, and GOG added a free, ready-to-run version in September 2013.

Is Flight of the Amazon Queen Free?
Yes. Flight of the Amazon Queen is freeware, with no price, no microtransactions and no paid version. The rights holders allow free downloads but not resale, so be wary of anyone trying to charge for it.
Gameplay & Features
It’s a classic point-and-click adventure. You explore the jungle, collect items, bargain with oddball locals and solve puzzles that run on the absurd logic of early-90s comedy adventures. Joe is a loving caricature of Indiana Jones, and the game isn’t shy about poking fun at the genre it borrows from.
- A pulp-serial story that starts as boy-saves-girl and escalates into pure nonsense.
- Pixel-art backgrounds in 256 colours at 320×200, true to the era.
- Full voice acting in the CD version, with Joe’s heavy accent front and centre.
- Voiced editions in English, French and German, plus Hebrew and Italian subtitle versions with English voices.
- A voiceless floppy version, for anyone who wants the stripped-down original.
It sits in good company. Beneath a Steel Sky is another freeware classic hosted by ScummVM, Broken Sword 2.5 is a fan-made sequel with Paris-set intrigue, Zak McKracken: Between Time and Space is a globe-trotting fan sequel with plenty of humor, and the Space Quest II remake delivers more sci-fi laughs.
