Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free open-source roguelike computer role playing game. The game receives updates on a regular basis and has been free to play since it’s first release in 2006.
There are two ways you can play the game. The game is available for download for Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Android operating systems. The game can be downloaded from the official Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup website. The game is also available via your browser. Simply head over to the same official site and click “Play Now”. Once registration is complete, simply login and you’re free to start playing.
Players create characters and guide them through numerous levels of a dungeon in search of monsters and treasure. The primary objective is to find three “Runes of Zot”, the “Orb of Zot” and then escape the dungeon alive. The dungeons are procedural so they are different with each play through. The dungeons themselves explore the different realms of Zot. These include Elven Halls, Orchish Mines, the Abyss and more. Each dungeon contains 15 Runes of Zot and 1 Orb of Zot. These items are located at random points usually at the end of the branches of the dungeon. Once a player collects three runes and the orb they can attempt to escape from the dungeon.
Like your typical RPG, player characters earn experience points by defeating monsters and finding treasure. This experience will eventually lead to player characters leveling up which in turn allows them to upgrade/enhance their skills and abilities. During character creation, players will determine their character’s background. There are 24 different background choice available to players and include traditional character classes such as Fighters, Wizards, Assassins and more. These background choices determine the players starting skills and equipment available to them, but as they earn experience and level up, they are free to pursue any skills available.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup was created as a branch of Linley’s Dungeon Crawl when development on that game stopped in mid-2005. It is available for Windows PCs, Mac OS X, Android and Linux operating systems as well as a browser based version. There are also some public servers that support online play which allow players to track high score and record play for viewing. The online version of the game also features ghosts of actual player characters as well.
The Windows, Mac OS X, Android and Linux version are available on the game’s official page. Links to the browser based version is also provided.
