About This Game

Dreamweb is a free, grim cyberpunk adventure with a top-down view and a story that refuses to explain itself. You play Ryan, a bartender in a gritty futuristic city, who has started dreaming of a place called the Dreamweb. A master monk of the Keepers tells him seven evils are plotting to destroy it, and Ryan wakes up knowing exactly what he has to do: kill them. Whether the Dreamweb is real or Ryan is simply losing his mind is left deliberately open.

Content note: this is not a cosy retro comedy. It was rated 15 on release, and ScummVM stresses that its disturbing story and violence make it unsuitable for children.

Creative Reality made the game, with Neil Dodwell among its creators, and Empire Interactive published it in 1994 for MS-DOS and Amiga. It drew on Blade Runner, and it wasn’t a big commercial hit. It did attract controversy. In 1995 it was refused classification in Australia, and it reportedly got through only after the game was resubmitted with underpants added to a rock star character.

On October 21, 2012, Creative Reality and Neil Dodwell released the game as freeware, announced through ScummVM. The first release covered English, French and Spanish, and ScummVM now also hosts German and Italian editions.

Is Dreamweb Free?

Yes. Dreamweb is freeware. Its creators and copyright holders released it for use with ScummVM, so there’s no price, no microtransactions and no paid version.

Gameplay & Features

You see each location from above, in a small window of the screen, and you click on objects and people to interact with them. Dialogue is straightforward, with no branching options, but you still need to talk to people to find new places. Inventory space is limited, and plenty of items are filler, so you have to judge what might matter. Ryan often faces kill-or-be-killed moments, and sometimes innocents die.

  • A bleak cyberpunk city with seven targets and an ending that’s up for debate.
  • Top-down point-and-click play at 320×200 in 256 colours, with 640×480 video scenes.
  • Freeware editions in English (UK and US), French, German, Italian and Spanish.
  • A CD version and a smaller floppy version, both free.
  • Free manuals, including the Diary of a (Mad?) Man that sets up the story.

Download the manuals. The freeware version keeps the original copy protection and network logon passwords, and the manual points you to the early steps, such as logging on as Ryan. Without it, you may get stuck early on.

If this suits you, Beneath a Steel Sky offers cyberpunk with more humor. Broken Sword 2.5 is a conspiracy thriller with a lighter touch, Lure of the Temptress is another ScummVM freeware debut, and Drascula is the cheerful opposite of Dreamweb.
