Command & Conquer: Red Alert is real time strategy game that was released in 1996 for the PC and is the second game released on the Command & Conquer series of RTS games. Set in an alternative history Red Alert features both a single player story campaign as well as a multiplayer skirmish mode with support for up to eight players online.
When it was released the game quickly caught-on and was very popular for it’s easy user interface, multiplayer game play and new features it brought to the genre such as unit groups, queued commands and more. The single player campaign was also praised for it’s compelling story line, variety of mission types and live action cut-scenes. The story line features a fictitious World War 3 between the Allies and Soviet Union that takes place in Europe.
The game was released as freeware by Electronic Arts in 2008 to mark the 13th anniversary of it’s release and as a promotion to the announcement/release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Electronic Arts has since stopped providing the free game download but it continues to be available on third party sites for download, but the safest place to find is over at CnCNet.org. This website offers the Command & Conquer Red Alert free downloads for both the single player and multiplayer game modes. These downloads are installers which allow you to install the game on a Windows PC or Mac OS X without the need for an emulator or virtual machine as others do. Cncnet.org also supports and hosts multiplayer matches through more than a dozen tunneling servers. In addition to Command & Conquer: Red Alert, CnCNet.org also hosts downloads for other C&C games released as freeware.
