Beneath a Steel Sky is a sci-fi point-and-click adventure game released in 1994 for MS-DOS and Amiga computers which has since been ported to Mac OS X and Linux operating systems as well. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future that came as a result of over pollution and nuclear weapons. The game begins with the protagonist, Robert Foster, being kidnapped and taking by soldiers to Union City. It so happens that Union City is run by an all powerful computer called LINC and the soldiers who have taken Robert are unable to provide him with an explanation why. From there it is up to the players to uncover the mystery behind the corrupt society.
Beneath A Steel Sky is played in the third person perspective with players using the point-and-click interface that allows them to move about the environment and interact with certain objects. When released the game received overwhelming positive reviews and has become a cult classic of PC gaming. It was released as freeware in 2003 and has also seen the release of a commercial iOS version titled Beneath A Steel Sky Remastered.
The game remains completely free and while it is readily available through many third party hosting sites it’s not always straight forward on how to play. Much like many of the point-and-click graphical adventure games Beneath A Steel Sky requires the ScrummVM emulator/virtual machine which is short for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. In order to play Beneath A Steel Sky you will need to download and install the ScrummVM. Once installed, you can simply load the Beneath A Steel Sky folder into ScrummVM and begin playing.
