0 A.D. free game for the PC, Linux and iOS. It is an open source game that began as a total conversion mod to Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings back in 2001. The game was released into open source in 2009 by Wildfire games and continues to receive regular updates. The most recent updates to the game are from December 2018.
Wildfire Games still considers the game to be in an “Alpha” state of development. The game play for this release centers around the years 500 B.C. to 1 B.C. The second phase for development of 0 A.D. will focus on years 1 A.D. to 500 A.D.
The game features many standard game play elements found in real time strategy games. This includes base building, resource management, resource collection and warfare. There are 12 playable civilizations in 0 A.D., all from classical antiquity. Each civilization in the game is represented at their peak power. This is obviously not historically accurate but has been done for the sake of game play and game balance. Units for each civilization are unique with both land and sea units. In addition, 0 A.D. features game play elements such as technology research via buildings. This research modifies the types of units and their abilities/powers.
Also, the game features a full single player mode as well as a multiplayer mode on skirmish style maps.
