About Freeciv

Freeciv is a free turn based strategy game that has been inspired by Sid Meier's Civilization. Freeciv is open source, making it completely free to download and play. A Windows executable version can be downloaded from the official Freeciv website. The Freeciv source code is also available which allows for the game to be compiled to work on other operating systems in addition to Windows. Freeciv.org is also available as a browser based game allowing you to play the game without having to download and install locally. There are two browser versions a two-dimensional HTML5 based version and a three-dimensional WEBGL version. Freeciv can be played in single player or multiplayer formats.

Similar to games in the Civilization series, in Freeciv players assume the role of a leader of an ancient (or current) civilization in the year 4000 B.C. and attempt to guide them through the ages all the way through the Space Age and beyond. Players will explore and discover new lands, found and conquer cities, manage building and resource as well as take part in warfare and conquest. Freecov also includes scientific research and advancements, diplomacy, trade and many of the game play elements of the Civilization series.

There are a number of victory conditions available in Freeciv, most common is when one civilization has survived and all others have been conquered. Other victory conditions include the first civilization to colonize space and a time limit condition with the highest scoring civilization winning.

A Very Brief History of Freeciv

The initial release of Freeciv was in 1996 when students at Denmark's Aarhus University wanted to create a game that combined elements of XPilot and Sid Meier's Civilization, with the primary goal of making a Civilization like game playable online. Since then the game has gone through numerous changes and enhancements but has stayed true to the original goal of free Civilization like game available for single and multiplayer game play.
