Free racing games are a scrappier bunch than free shooters, but the best of them are genuinely great, and they cover every corner of the genre: time-trial precision, hardcore sims, cartoon karts, quarter-mile drags, and retro classics. This is our ranking of the best free racing games for PC right now.
The free racing scene is thinner than it looks. Plenty of “free” racers on other lists are dead, paid, or built around microtransactions and NFTs. Every game here is one we’ve confirmed is genuinely free, still available, and worth your time, whether that’s free-to-play, freeware, or fully open source.
From the polished heavy-hitters up top to niche gems and open-source labors of love further down, here’s where to point your download.
Trackmania

The best free racing game, full stop. Ubisoft Nadeo’s arcade time-trial racer is all about precision, shaving milliseconds off gravity-defying tracks and restarting instantly to nail the perfect run. There are 1,500-plus tracks, a huge creation community, and real esports. The free Starter Access gets you racing right away, and a cheap subscription unlocks the deeper tools.
RaceRoom Racing Experience

The best free sim, and the cheapest way into serious circuit racing. RaceRoom is the official DTM game, with excellent physics and strong force feedback. It’s free to download with a rotating set of cars and tracks, and you buy the specific content you want. None of it is pay-to-win.
Asphalt Legends

The go-to free arcade racer, gloriously over-the-top. Formerly Asphalt 9, it hands you 250-plus real hypercars and sends you barrel-rolling and nitro-boosting through global tracks. It’s flashy and instantly accessible. Just know the free-to-play economy is the grindiest here, and better cars can be bought.
SuperTuxKart

The best free kart racer, and one of the finest free games anywhere. This open-source Mario Kart alternative is completely free, with no ads and no microtransactions, offering wild tracks, power-ups, online and split-screen multiplayer, and a bottomless library of community karts and tracks. Perfect for families.
TrackMania Nations Forever

The freeware classic that still holds up. This 2008 Trackmania is pure, precise stadium time-trial racing, completely free, tiny to download, and running on virtually any PC. It packs 65 tracks, a track editor, and a community that never left. The lightweight retro pick.
GeneRally

A tiny freeware gem from 2002 that’s outlasted games a hundred times its size. GeneRally is a top-down arcade racer where you see the whole track at once, ideal for local multiplayer with up to six players. Add built-in track and car editors plus two decades of community content, and it never gets old. It’s barely a couple of megabytes.
Night-Runners Prologue

The most atmospheric free racer you can download. A love letter to 1990s-2000s Japanese street racing, it’s about car ownership as much as speed, buying beaters at auction, tuning them, and racing crews for territory. It’s the free Prologue (a proof-of-concept slice) and single-player only, but it’s strikingly polished and completely free with no microtransactions.
Disney Speedstorm

Gameloft’s answer to Mario Kart, with a roster no one else can match. Race as Mickey, Buzz, Jack Sparrow, and dozens more Disney and Pixar characters, each with a signature ultimate. It’s a polished, accessible hero kart racer that’s free to play, though the gacha-style economy for unlocking racers is grindy.
Speed Dreams

The serious free sim for enthusiasts, and it’s fully open source. A TORCS successor built by volunteers, Speed Dreams offers genuine physics, capable AI, and a garage of GT cars and single-seaters, all free with no strings. It’s niche, visually dated, and single-player, but for a no-cost sim fix, nothing else matches it.
Nitro Nation

The drag-racing pick. Build a car from a stock shell into a nitro monster, then nail the perfect shift over a quarter mile, with 150-plus licensed cars and deep tuning. It’s a mobile-style free-to-play game on PC via the Microsoft Store, so it’s grindy, but the drag racing and car building are genuinely satisfying.
