0 A.D. is a free open source real time strategy game that began as a total conversion mod to Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings back in 2001. The project was released as open source with Wildfire Games releasing the source code in 2009. The game was released in March of 2016 in an alpha state and game play of the first release centers around the years 500 B.C. to 1 B.C. The second phase of development/release for 0 A.D will center around the years 1 A.D. to 500 A.D.

The game features many of the standard real time strategy game play found in most RTS games including base building, resource management and harvesting, unit training and warfare. Upon release 0 A.D. features 12 playable civilizations from antiquity. Each civilization is represented int the game at the peak of their power, which is not historically accurate but done for the sake of game play and balance. Units are unique for each civilization with land and sea units being available.

The game also feature technologies which are researched at buildings and modify abilities/powers of units. 0 A.D. also features a full single player mode as well as a multiplayer mode on skirmish style maps.

0 A.D. is available for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux operating systems. As of November 2016, the game is still under development so expect changes and updates as new features are developed. No final completion date has been announced but the alpha version is freely available. Be sure to check out the 0 A.D. downloads page for more information.
